This holiday shopping season is winding down, and we know that there are still loved ones on your list. They could be hard to buy for, or perhaps you are simply short on time. You have pushed the gift hunt deadline, and it will be a frantic scavenger hunt before you know it. We are featuring one of our favorite local retailers to give you a little guidance, and to give them a little love.
In 1993, Clair Yost opened Yostmark, a mountaineering and backcountry shop in Teton Valley, Idaho. Yost made his mark in the ski industry as the innovative mind behind Mountain Noodles – one of the first soft, fat, powder skis. These were made specifically for the phenomenal powder conditions of the Tetons. Yostmark’s over twenty-year presence in Teton Valley has established a solid following among visiting powder hounds and locals.
Owned and staffed by backcountry enthusiasts, Yostmark holds a wealth of information and gear for the backcountry, whether it is skiing (Nordic, telemark and AT), snowshoeing, climbing, camping, hiking or backpacking in the Tetons and the West. Recently, they moved their shop from the corner of 3rd and Little in Driggs to a location just a stone’s throw away. During a recent visit, it became evident that the space is meant for the Yostmark team. The inventory has been thoughtfully mapped out, and is enhanced by natural light streaming through the windows. Walking through, there is a feeling of ease here coupled with familiarity.
A wall near the front of the store – a former house – features knit hats and scarves that are too cushy to resist. There is one here for your girlfriend, I promise. Did you vow to try something new this season? A wall of skis and snowshoes inspire the possibilities. There are equipment tuning services, gadgets and gear to keep you going, and fanciful socks. As I browsed for the gift recipients on my list, I started to make a separate list that was just for me (their clothing selection is pretty sweet, what can I say?).
While I now start dropping hints to my own husband, you’ve got the real scoop on an awesome retailer that will steer you in the right gift giving direction. You can’t go wrong if you take a trip to Yostmark – and shopping local gives Teton Valley a little boost of its own.
