Embrace Your Inner Goonie at the Teton Ogre AR

Who doesn’t crave a treasure map and some challenging terrain? Well you can pack the gear but the map isn’t your call in Adventure Racing—no one is going to tell you how to get there, find the check points and cross the finish line. You might not even know if you come in first place.

Adventure Racing is essentially a giant scavenger hunt in the wilderness for grown-ups, and includes sections on foot, paddling, ropes courses, cycling and more. Adventure racing can include shredding through tight single track on a mountain bike or orienteering and hiking through a dense forest. Adventure racers may find themselves ripping down rapids in a canoe and then rappelling off a 100 ft rock face. Races can last a few hours or several days and can cover 10 - 100 miles or more. And don’t forget surprises. Adventure Race courses are filled with challenges and surprising obstacles for you or your team to tackle. It’s unlikely that it will include a one eyed pirate named Willie and gold. Adventure Racing is one of the few sports where just completing a race is often considered a victory. Another driving factor in Adventure Racing is the emphasis that is placed on teamwork, rather than individual achievement. Goonies never say die.

The founders of the Teton Ogre Race, Abby Broughton and Jason Popilsky, exemplify teamwork. The pair completed their first AR when they first started dating—a fun off the beaten path date landed them first place in the 12 hour Missoula Adventure Race. “We got lucky. We had the fitness for it. But really we went for it for the fun. It’s still one of my favorite days that I have spent with Jason.”

Five years later, they are still together and still doing adventure races around the world. “Adventure races are scavenger hunts for big kids. We started racing more and more.” Abby and Jason began to realize that they could share the same thrill of the adventure race with a place they both loved, Teton Valley. And so The Ogre was born.

In the Fall of 2013, Abby and Jason went and scouted a potential course around the Valley. And things just came together. Now in it’s third year, the race has grown to host a 24hr race, an 8hr option for a one person, and 8hr option for a team. Yes— hard core: the 24hr race sounds daunting but is attracting a number of out of area competitors. The 24hr division is a regional qualifier for the US Adventure Racing Association Nationals. This year’s Teton Ogre dates are June 24th-26th, 2016.

According to Broughton, “the race will be challenging and epic for hard-core, out-of-towners who are expecting a struggle, but at the same time we also want to create a race that will be doable for weekend warriors who just want to go out and explore while somewhat gently testing their limits. So far we have the AR national champions coming to crush the 24hr, but also have a couple in their 50s doing their first ever 24hr race and all they want to do is finish! Jason and I are working hard to create a good experience for both groups.”

This is a great opportunity to come play in our backyard and entrants are still being accepted. We double dog dare you to yell “HEYYyyyyy YOooUuuu GUuuuuyyYS!!!” when you cross the finish line. Sign up here for the 2016 Teton Ogre Race.
