At Kate’s we love folks out there who share our multiple passions. Fitzgerald’s Bicycles, local to our neighborhood in Victor, Idaho, exemplifies our passion for real play. Real play is a critical component to a life well lived. It means you are taking the opportunity to work your body, and to participate in something that challenges you – and ultimately, makes you feel like a kid again.
Scott and Jannine Fitzgerald are taking their passion to the street with a Kickstarter campaign that is rooted in the mystery of what it means to be a kid. Most of all, a kid on a bike. For years the bicycle industry has been concerned with the national drop in cycling participation rates. Most recently, the National Sporting Goods Association reported a 42.9% decline in childhood bike riding over the last 10 years.
The Fitzgeralds hope to help change this alarming statistic through B is for Bicycle, a children’s book designed to communicate the fun and environmental benefits of cycling through the eyes of two dogs and their animal buddies. Stated simply, “We want more kids to not just ride bikes, we want them to develop a cycling lifestyle.”
Professional artist Kathleen Hansen was commissioned to illustrate the first four pages of the book in original watercolor. Each letter of the alphabet will be focused on cycling, healthy lifestyles in connected communities, and environmental stewardship. Once the project is fully funded (deadline is December 21st), Kathleen will move ahead with the remaining illustrations and the book will go to print.
In this season of giving, consider helping this project see reality – show your support for real play!
