Lin Heffner, the new Executive Director for Mountain Bike the Tetons (MBT), always dreamt of living in a mountain town. Lucky for us, early this spring she landed the job as ED (after quitting her job at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation a year ago, in search of the perfect mountain town), packed up her things, and moved from Seattle to Wilson, WY. Since then, Lin has been the go-to gal for strengthening the mountain biking communities on both the Wyoming and Idaho sides of the Tetons. She explains, “We wanted to combine forces to become stronger and more efficient … our main mission is to build new, multi-use trails, keeping everyone in mind.”
This timely collaboration of efforts coincided with the interests of forming a Teton-based chapter of IMBA (International Mountain Biking Association). IMBA helps establish mountain biking areas throughout the country. They provide trail building guidance and communication and grant-sourcing support to their various chapters.
IMBA put Teton mountain biking on the map, recently granting the area Ride Center status and deeming it one of the most desirable places to bike in the U.S. Ride Centers not only boast a copious amount of diverse trails, but they also have great area accommodations and food offerings. “We have international cuisine options [here in the Tetons] and really great American food too!” Lin adds.
And the efforts are ongoing, as MBT joins forces with Kate’s Real Food partner, the Teton Freedom Riders, as well as the Teton Valley Trails and Pathways, Friends of Pathways in Jackson, and all three of the area’s ski resorts. The ultimate goal is to increase interest in mountain biking for everyone, kids and families included, as a way to foster a healthy lifestyle.
Thanks Lin, we’re all in!
