Choosing Non-GMO
Genetically Modified Organisms
The Non-GMO Project defines GMOs as “living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering”. Most often, plants are modified to withstand sprays like herbicide and insecticide so that crops do not fall victim to weeds and harmful insects. Additionally, genetic modifications can also be used to lengthen store shelf life.
There is so much that we don’t understand about genetic modification and how it affects overall nutrition. This study on GMO safety concluded that the research outcomes are ‘often contradictory or inconclusive’.
While there is so much research to be done, and so much more to discover-- you can make the decision for yourself to avoid genetically modified foods and nourish your body with natural, whole food ingredients. There are many benefits of eating non-GMO ingredients. Fuel your body with the nutrients it needs with real, unaltered, non-GMO foods.
Reading Labels
In 2018, the U.S. The Department of Agriculture announced that food manufacturers must disclose the use of bioengineered foods. They also explain their choice of the term ‘Bioengineered’ as a way to encompass all the terminology that defines genetically modified organisms.
There is some debate about the effectiveness of these labels, so it's important to look for non-GMO products. This can be done by reading through the product ingredients in addition to looking for the non-GMO label.
