What is Real Food?

What is Real Food?

At Kate’s Real Food, you’ll hear us describe our energy bars and bites as ‘real food’ or filled with ‘whole food’ energy. What we mean is that we use foods that are closest to their natural state-- unprocessed or minimally processed foods that haven’t been and stripped of their nutrients.

Havard School of Public Health explains that “unprocessed foods include the natural edible food parts of plants and animals. Minimally processed foods have been slightly altered for the main purpose of preservation but which does not substantially change the nutritional content of the food.”

How Do I Start Eating Real Food?

If you aren’t sure if the foods you’re eating are considered ‘real food’, then take a closer look at your ingredients lists and nutrition facts with the different food groups (USDA My Plate) in mind:

  • Protein Foods
  • Dairy
  • Whole Grains
  • Nuts + Seeds
  • Fruits
  • Vegetables

Benefits of Real Food

We live in a world of convenience that pushes highly processed and harmful foods into our daily lives. At Kate’s, we believe that things should be simple-- and here are a few of the many benefits of eating a real food diet:

    1. Vitamins + Minerals

Real foods are filled with their natural vitamins and minerals. When food is heavily processed, it can remove or destroy nutrients.

    2. Fiber

According to the Mayo Clinic, fiber is mainly found in real foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes. Our bodies require daily fiber for our digestive health and real food ingredients are the best suppliers.

    3. No Additives

During processing, sugars, salts, and chemicals may be added to a food. These additives drive up the sugar content and can be harmful to your health. Choose foods that are sweetened naturally with foods like organic honey.

  1. Sustainability

Producing and consuming processed foods creates a lot of waste. Choosing real food for your meals supports organic farmers and helps to reduce waste.
