How to Set and Accomplish Goals: Life as a Business Owner, Athlete & Mom

Shannon Mahre holds many titles, one being Kate’s Real Food Brand Ambassador. We are so grateful to have her as a part of our team. Below she tells us how to set goals and how to accomplish goals while juggling the many responsibilities as an athlete, entrepreneur, and mom!

As I am sitting on my living room floor writing, my 4 year old is taking his afternoon nap and my 3 month old is enjoying some tummy time on the mat next to me. This is how my “work time” looks these days because I am a mom that not only juggles 2 kids, but also has 3 businesses (Mahre Athletic Development Experience, Girls with Grit, and Mahre Media)

Oh, and did I mention that I try my best to also keep up as a 4-season athlete?

So, how do I keep on track with my goals and passions with this rather full plate? And how can you do the same? Here are some of my tips and tricks that I’ve learned (and am still learning) along the way:

  1. Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff

    Truth: most days I have spit-up in my unbrushed hair from my 3 month old, snot on one or both of my shoulders from my 4 year old, no make-up on— and it’s very likely that my clothes have food (and more spit-up) on them from cooking and baking in between work and kiddo wrangling all day long.

    I’ve realized this is the true reality of my life right now-- and (although it took me until I was into my 30’s to finally realize it) I think I am most beautiful when I am my natural, raw self. Besides, I’d rather spend the time being a fun, badass mom than wasting it in front of the mirror.

  2. Don’t Give Up on YOUR Passions and YOUR Goals

    When I became a mom, I was hellbent on not losing sight of my passions and goals. I believe in bringing kids into your world of adventure and showing them how to set goals and follow their passions-- with and without a family in tow. Actions will always speak louder than words, and how could I be the role model I wanted to be and teach them to be goal-setters if I gave up on mine after becoming a parent?

    My goals may be different or more long-term than they were in the past, but they are still there - and I work towards them every day. Setting goals and working on how to accomplish goals is and will always be a part of my life.

  3. How to Set Goals

    Figure out how to set goals that revolve around your passions and write them down:

    • What makes you happy?
    • What excites you?
    • What are your passions?

    Finally, define the steps you need to accomplish goals and set a timeline that you’d like to accomplish your goal by.

  4. There Will Be Good Days and Bad Days

    Some days I get a TON done - everything on my proverbial list - AND I managed to take the kids on an adventure, have the house clean and have a healthy, home-cooked dinner on the table. Then there are the other days… and I swear the kids have made a pact to see how far I can be pushed until I self-combust.

    My advice-- keep those expectations low and give yourself grace. To-do lists are my best friend and my calendar is always up to date. But, in order to get those items accomplished on time, I try to get them done ahead of time so that I am not down to the last day-- because it never fails that that will be the day the kids gang-up against me.

  5. Make Time for YOU

    I still feel ‘mom guilt’ every time I go for a run, workout, or go on a horseback ride. However, I do my darndest to enjoy every moment of freedom-- because this time away makes me a better mom, a better wife and a better business owner.

Last Words of Wisdom

Be accountable, show up and know that you only get one shot at this life. You truly are your only limit. Set that bar high and keep on raising it!
