Improve Recycling from Home

Posted by Kate's Real Food on 3rd Aug 2020

Real change begins within the walls of your own home. Small changes in your day-to-day life can make a real, sustainable difference. You do your best to reuse, repurpose, and recycle-- now is the time to take it one step further. Improve your recycling from home habits to take your own sustainability practices to the next level.

Recycling Basics

Let’s start with the basics. It is never too late to start recycling at home!

  • Material Decisions

Paper, plastic, and glass are a great place to start-- but the more the merrier! We all have to start somewhere, so pick a few materials that you frequently use so that you can get started with the next step.

  • Gather + Sort

Set up specific bins to sort each category into. Make a plan so that everyone in the home knows and participates--which increases the accountability. It is much easier to sort as you go, than it to sift through the rubble just before garbage day.

  • Find Community Recycling Centers

Locate your community’s recycling centers and take a good look at what they accept. Follow their regulations and expectations to make sure your donations are properly processed.

  • Repeat

Keep it up! Don’t let one successful trip be the end of it. Learn more about the importance of recycling and the true difference you are making.

Improve Recycling

Now that you understand the ins and outs of recycling, let’s level up. Here are a few extra tricks you can use to improve the way you recycle from home.

  1. Reduce use of plastics

It is wonderful that you are gathering your plastic waste to be reused! But, finding a better alternative to one-use plastics makes a big difference. Cloth shopping bags are a great place to start.

  2. Clean it out

Rinse your bottles, wipe down the trash. The last thing you want is contaminated materials that won’t be accepted. Keep it clean and keep it dry.

  3. Buy recycled materials

Support the companies that are doing it the right way! Keep the process moving full circle and be a part of sustainability practices around the world.

  4. Do your research

The ways that we recycle are improving-- stay up to date and be a voice for your community to keep these practices moving forward.

  5. Expand your practice

Add a few extra skills to your recycling resume like conscious purchasing, composting at home, energy saving practices, and overall reducing waste. Recycling is just the beginning.

At Kate’s Real Food, our ongoing sustainable practices are an integral part of our company’s culture and production. We proudly recycle plastics, glass, paper, metals, and cardboard.

We celebrate all adventures, knowing that we all have a special connection to the land. We are committed to protecting and exploring the beauty of the natural world along with you.
